17 inch laptops are a rare breed. Manufacturers focus more on 14-inch and 15-inch laptops.

They often need to remember that people need a laptop bigger than 15 inches. Besides, there are many benefits of having a 17 inch laptop.

A bigger 17-inch laptop makes content consumption fun and provides you with more screen real estate so you can work easily.

As we mentioned earlier, a few 17 inch laptops are available on the market. And finding the best one is even harder as you accidentally buy one that sucks.

So to help you make an educated purchase decision, here are our top picks for the best 17-inch laptops you can buy for under $1000 in 2023.

What is the best 17 inch laptop in 2022?

The best 17 inch laptop to buy under 1000 is the Asus Vivobook 17X.

Asus Vivobook 17X | Best Powerful 17 inch laptop under $1000

Front view of Asus Vivobook 17X

CPU: Intel Core i9-13900H | GPU: Iris Xe Graphics | RAM: 16GB | Display: 17” 1920×1080 | Storage: 1TB SSD | Battery: 50Wh | OS: Windows 11

The 2023 Vivobook 17X is the best powerful 17 inch laptop under 1000. The obvious highlight of the Vivbook 17X is its powerhouse of a processor.

The Core i9 13900H is a 14-core beast that churns through any workload you throw at. This makes the Vivobook 17X for someone who does a lot of code compiling, video rendering, or regularly multitasks.

However, it does fall a bit short when it comes to its display when it comes to color accuracy, so I suggest plugging in an external color-accurate monitor when working with the Vivobook 17X.

The keyboard on the Vivobook 17X feels snappy and fast, and for someone like me who types on the regular, makes the keyboard a delight to use. Also, the clean and minimal finish of the Vivobook gives off an impression of a premium ultrabook.

So it no way you would feel like you are using a budget device, though there’s noticeable flex on the keyboard deck but nothing I would consider a deal breaker.

Asus also decide to cut some corners to keep the price by including a smaller 50Wh battery that would run out in the middle of the day. But if all you care about is amazing CPU performance under a beautiful chassis, then the Vivobook 17X would simply not disappoint.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Amazing performance for the price
  • Satisfying and fun keyboard
  • Clean and premium design
Cons
  • Bland display
  • Battery life is mediocre at best
  • Noticeable flex on the keyboard deck

Asus Zenbook Pro 17 | Best color-accurate 17 inch laptop under $1000

Front view of Asus Zenbook Pro 17

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H | GPU: RTX 3060 6GB 130W | RAM: 16GB DDR4 | Display: 17.3” 1920×1080 | Storage: 512GB SSD | Battery: 48Wh | OS: Windows 11

If you want the best 17 inch laptop solely for creative work, then you can’t go wrong with the Asus Zenbook Pro 17.

The sleek metallic chassis with Asus ergo lift design helps the Zenbook Pro 17 stand out from the rest of the boring laptops while also being minimal.

The Asus Zenbook Pro 17 is great for color-sensitive work, as its PANTONE-certified 17-inch 1080p display easily covers the entire DCI P3 color space.

And being a laptop focused on productivity and excellent color reproduction easily gets bright up to 400 nits. This makes the Zenbook Pro 17 one of the best 17 inch laptops under $1000 in display quality.

The Zenbook Pro continues impressing us just in the display department. The Ryzen 6800H, despite being a bit old, still shreds in multi-threaded workloads.

This means that the Zenbook Pro 17 would comfortably render any project without hiccups.

Though what could have complimented the Ryzen 6800H better would have been the inclusion of an Nvidia GPU, which would have been helpful in video rendering thanks to the NVENC encoder.

What also kind of sucks about the Zenbook Pro 17 is the lack of expandable RAM, which is crucial in a creative laptop as 8GB RAM ain’t gonna cut it in more demanding workloads.

Also, since it’s powered by an AMD processor, it lacks Thunderbolt capability. If you rely on Thunderbolt, you might have to look elsewhere.

However, despite being a performance-focused laptop, the Zenbook 17 Pro provides excellent battery life on casual use, lasting comfortably around 8-10 hours.

And the keyboard is also really nice if you do a lot of typing. The keys have considerable travel, though, in the end, they provide satisfying tactile feedback, which allows you to type on for hours.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Good performance
  • The keyboard is nice to type on
  • The display is beautiful and color accurate
  • Decent battery life
Cons
  • Lacks expandable RAM
  • Nvidia GPU would have been nice

Acer Nitro 5 |  Best 17 inch Gaming Laptop under $1000

Acer Nitro 5 17 inch

CPU: Core i5-12500H | GPU: RTX 3050 4GB 95W | RAM: 32GB | Display: 17” 1920×1080 144Hz | Storage:1TB SSD | Battery: 90Wh | OS: Windows 11

The Acer Nitro 5 is the best gaming 17 inch laptop money can buy under $1000. Though the display on it is not the best when it comes to color accuracy, it’s buttery smooth thanks to the 144Hz refresh rate which makes using the Nitro 5 so much fun. It also gets fairly bright at around 310 nits.

The combination of the i5 12500H and the RTX 3050 is perfect, and it can drive many demanding games such as RDR2 at playable framerates, while older triple-A titles like GTA V and SOTR can confidently run at 60FPS. Do note that it gets quite warm and the fans ramp up quite a bit under load which gets quite unpleasant. I suggest using a headset to block all that noise out.

As for the eSports titles like CS GO and Valorant, they can comfortably run at high framerates providing a smooth experience. Overall, the Nitro 5 offers great performance for gaming.

The typing experience is also quite fun with its nice tactile feedback and the keys are well-spaced out and have 4 zone RGB backlit. So if you type occasionally, the Nitro 5 won’t disappoint you. Though the touchpad is tiny, that shouldn’t really be a problem considering many use an external gaming mouse.

Also for a gaming laptop, the Nitro 5 also provides amazing battery life, lasting around 7-8 hours which is quite impressive. And the Nitro 5 doesn’t disappoint either when it comes to expansion with its Dual RAM and M.2 Slots.

With its amazing performance, great keyboard, and surprisingly good battery life, The Nitro 5 is the best 17 inch gaming laptop to get under the $1000 budget.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Good performance
  • Spacious and tactile keyboard
  • Great expansion capability
  • Great battery life
Cons
  • Tiny touchpad
  • Can get quite warm and loud underload
  • Display is not color accurate

HP 17-inch Laptop | Best 17 inch laptop under $1000 for Office use

HP 17 inch

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5625u | GPU: Radeon Graphics | RAM: 32GB | Display: 17” 1920×1080 | Storage: 1TB SSD | Battery: 38Wh | OS: Windows 11

The HP 17-inch laptop is an amazing offering by HP for people who want to do a bit more than just normal office work, which is why it made it into our list of best 17 inch laptops under $1000.

The HP 17 also features a Ryzen 5 that has remarkable multi-threaded performance which allows it to do a lot more than do basic word processing work in Microsoft Word or Excel.

You can multitask with ease on it thanks to its ample 32GB RAM which makes it easier to open multiple Chrome tabs or simultaneously work across different apps without experiencing any hiccups.

The snappy keyboard makes typing quick and easy, though, a big turn-off about the keyboard is the lack of backlit which makes it harder to type in darker environments. Also, the lack of biometric verification is also a shame.

The 17 inch display on the other hand provides enough screen real estate to work between multiple apps while also being fairly bright and relatively color accurate compared to the rest of the competition.

The HP 17 inch also has a very unique texture and design with an overall black finish with tiny white specks that most would confuse for dust specks. I personally don’t like this kind of design but if it’s something you dig, then more power to you!

But overall, the HP 17 inch is a solid performance package under $1000 that is worth looking at if you are out shopping for a good 17 inch laptop.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Satisfying and fast keyboard
  • Great expandability
  • Good performance
  • Decent display
Cons
  • White speck design may not be for everyone
  • No biometric verification
  • Lackluster ports, USB C only transfers data, and no SD card
  • Lacks keyboard backlit

Lenovo Ideapad 3 17” | Best 17 inch laptop with a great keyboard

Lenovo Ideapad 3 17 inch side view

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5625u | GPU: Radeon Graphics | RAM:40GB | Display: 17” 1920×1080 | Storage: 1TB SSD | Battery: 38Wh | OS: Windows 11

The Ideapad 3 lineup has always been for those who are budget conscious and don’t want to break the bank while also not compromising on performance. And that’s what makes the Ideapad 3 one of the best 17 inch laptops under 1000.

The Ideapad 3 also packs in considerable multitasking potential thanks to the 6-core Ryzen 5 processor. It’s powerful enough to handle occasional demanding tasks like video editing while also holding up in your regular workflow when you multitask.

Combining that with the 40GB RAM on our specific unit and you have a multitasking powerhouse!

So if you work back and forth between multiple Chrome tabs, the Ideapad 3 can handle it without breaking a sweat.

The keyboard has a bit too short travel for my taste though it still allows me to type pretty fast while also not fatiguing my fingers. Lenovo always makes sure to provide a good typing experience and the Ideapad 3 is no exception here.

Where the Ideapad 3 disappoints a bit is the battery life as the tiny 38Wh battery only last 6 hours. Which is not awful but could have been better. Thankfully, Lenovo did compensate us for the smaller battery by including a 2.5-inch drive bay along with the regular M.2 SSD.

So if you are someone who wants a ton of storage on the move without breaking the bank, the Ideapad 3 17 inch is the laptop for you. You could just plug in a hard drive and get bulk storage on the cheap!

The Ideapad 3 also has an average display that is fine for basic office work and for watching casual Youtube videos but I won’t recommend watching movies on it or doing sensitive color work.

That being said, if you are willing to overlook the minor annoyances, the Ideapad 3 is the best 17 inch laptop under 1000 for extreme multitasking and productivity workloads.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Great Performance
  • Snappy and fast keyboard
  • Great expandability options
Cons
  • Small battery
  • display is average
  • I/O ports could have been better

Acer Aspire 5 Slim | Best 17 inch laptop under $1000 with a great design

Front view Acer Aspire 5 Slim

CPU: Intel Core i5-1335U | GPU: Iris Xe Graphics | RAM: 8GB | Display: 17” 1920×1080 | Storage:512GB SSD | Battery: 50Wh | OS: Windows 11

The Aspire 5 Slim is for those looking for the perfect office 17 inch laptop under $1000. It’s one of the few 17 inch laptops under $1000 that has the latest 2023 Intel raptor lake processor with the i5 1335u.

As you might expect, it’s blazing fast and also offers improved multi-core performance from the already great alder lake processor from last year. The Aspire 5 Slim will easily handle your basic office workflow which may include working on spreadsheets and Word documents. And if you want to practice coding on the side, it can compile code too like a champ.

The spacious keyboard deck can make typing comfortable and can contribute significantly to your workflow. Though the keyboard does feel a bit mushy nothing I would consider a deal breaker. Also, the lack of biometric verification is also a huge bummer.

The battery also lasts around 6 hours which may be usable though Acer should have been able to get more out of it if they optimize it

Another highlight of the Aspire 5 Slim is the 1080p webcam which is hard to find on budget laptops. This makes the Acer Aspire 5 Slim the perfect 17 inch laptop under 1000 for someone who attends Zoom calls regularly and needs a presentable camera.

And the 1080p display under the webcam may not be the best when it comes to color accuracy but it has good viewing angles and gets fairly bright around 300 nits.

Also, the premium finish of the aluminum chassis will surely turn heads in the board meeting as it stands out from the rest of the bland laptops in a boardroom meeting.

So if you want the best office 17 inch laptop, then the Aspire 5 Slim is the one you should definitely consider getting.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Design that looks and feel premium
  • Great CPU performance
  • 1080p webcam with AI quirks
  • Spacious keyboard deck
  • Loud speakers
Cons
  • Battery life could have been better
  • No biometric verification
  • The display lacks color accuracy
  • Keyboard could have been more spaced out

CPU:Intel Celeron N4500 | GPU: Intel HD Graphics | RAM: 4GB | Display: 17” 1920×1080 | Storage: 64GB eMMC | Battery: N/A | OS: Chrome OS

If you are a Chrome OS user and need a 17 inch Chromebook that doesn’t break the bank, then you should definitely consider the Acer Chromebook 317.

Before we talk about the positives, let’s get the bad stuff out of the way. The performance is not amazing here. The slow eMMC storage, along with limiting 4GB RAM hampers the capability hampers its multitasking capability.

When using the Acer Chromebook 317, the most you can do is work on a couple of Chrome tabs while a Word document is opened.

Don’t expect to open around 20 Chrome tabs while playing music in the background when working on a Word document, as this laptop simply can’t handle that.

The 17 inch display on the Acer Chromebook 317 is also poor in terms of brightness; it maxes out at around 270 nits. And it produces washed-out bland colors. So this display is only best for working on Word documents or spreadsheets instead of consuming content.

However, the keyboard is great on the Acer Chromebook 317. The keys are well-spaced, and there is enough room on the keyboard deck.

The keys provide satisfying tactile feedback, which makes typing fun and of the defining features of the Acer Chromebook 317.  And the touchpad is also roomy and tracks perfectly.

This is one of the reasons why the Acer Chromebook 317 is the best 17 inch laptop under $1000.

The battery life on the Acer Chromebook 317 is amazing too. It manages to comfortably last around 10 hours with ease.

And the I/O ports are also great on this Chromebook with dual USB C and USB Type-A ports which is usually not common on a Chromebook, making it one of the best 17 inch Chromebook laptops under $1000 with good I/O Ports.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Great keyboard
  • Decent battery life
  • Great I/O ports
Cons
  • Display is poor
  • Slow eMMC storage

The CX1 is another 17-inch Chromebook you can consider when shopping for the best 17-inch laptop for under $1000.

The performance on the CX1 is subpar. The Celeron N4500 is powerful enough to do basic web browsing tasks such as using Facebook or browsing Reddit. If you are a multitasker, you should probably stay away from this laptop.

Furthermore, the bad display trend is seen to be carried by the CX1, which looks bland and struggles to get bright, where it maxes out at 220 nits.

It’s not all bad, though; the CX1 delivers an excellent typing experience where the keys provide tactile feedback. Though the keys have short travel, they don’t feel fatiguing. The touchpad is nothing out of the ordinary and gets the job done.
