Charging your laptop with HDMI seems weird, considering that it is mainly used to carry audio and video, but it’s possible to charge your laptop.

However, note that charging your laptop is not advisable, and this feature is only available on limited laptops. So you are most likely out of luck, though even if you manage to find a laptop that supports this feature we would still not recommend it.

And we will explain why it’s not worth trying this as we move on with this guide.

However, this may be used as a last-resort option if you don’t have a charger nearby and you want to keep your laptop alive.

Charging with HDMI to HDMI Cable

Things You will need

  • A laptop with HDMI-IN Port
  • An HDMI Cable
  • A PC/ Game Console

Before attempting to charge your laptop through an HDMI port, it is important to confirm if it has an HDMI-IN port. Most laptops only have HDMI-OUT ports meant for connecting an external display and can’t be used for charging.

Attempting to charge through an HDMI-OUT port can cause damage to your laptop. However, if your laptop has an HDMI-IN port, you can try the following steps with an HDMI to HDMI cable:

Step 1: Connect one end of the HDMI cable to your laptop’s HDMI-IN port and the other to the HDMI-OUT port on another device such as a PC or a Game Console

Step 2: Check the systray (on the battery icon) to see if a power symbol appears.

If the charging symbols appear, then it means that your laptop is charging.

Remember that though this technically charges a laptop, the overall current delivered is not greater than what an actual charging brick would deliver. The low voltage can damage your laptop in the long term.

Furthermore, the HDMI port doesn’t have the necessary power safety features you would find in a power brick, nor is the HDMI standard capable of transferring more than 5V over the cable.

Hence we strongly recommend you use an official laptop charger recommended by your laptop’s manufacturer.

Charging with HDMI to USB C Adaptor

Things you will need

Step 1: Purchase an HDMI to USB-C adapter. Choose an adapter compatible with your laptop’s USB-C charging port.

Step 2: Connect one end of the HDMI port to the device with an HDMI OUT port, and connect the other end to the HDMI to USB C Adapter

Important Note: DO NOT CONNECT THE HDMI CABLE COMING FROM THE OUTPUT DEVICE DIRECTLY INTO YOUR LAPTOP’S HDMI OUT PORT. DOING SO WOULD DEFINITELY SHORTEN YOUR LAPTOP AND FRY IT.

Step 3: Connect your USB-C charger to the USB-C port of the adapter.

Step 4: Once the adapter is connected to your laptop and the charger, your laptop should start charging automatically.

Note: Not all HDMI to USB-C adapters support charging. Make sure to choose an adapter that is specifically designed for charging.
